Blue Bangor Slate Conservation & Heritage

Blue Bangor slates have been coming into Ireland for centuries.  The first recorded use of these slates in Ireland dates back to the 15th century but it is not until the middle the 19th century when they really started to make their mark on Irish architecture.

Many of the countries landmark buildings have been roofed with quality Welsh Blue Bangor slates, and their heather blue or purple colour is synonymous with Irish architecture.

In earlier years, it was common for Blue Bangor slates to come in large sizes – 36” size slates were not uncommon as were random diminishing courses.

It is important to note that, although the quarry’s main size is currently 50×30, large format and other sizes can also be produced for instances when the architect wants to replicate the original size of slates that were previously used.

Recent examples of projects to which we supplied large format slate Blue Bangors includes:

● St. Mel’s Cathedral, Longford

● St. Marys, Waterford

● Crumlin Road Prison, Belfast

● Guild Hall, Derry (pictured above)

● Grangegorman Laundry, Dublin
